Britain on the Brink

This article of mine, on the civil unrest sweeping Britain exactly 100 years ago, appears in the Daily Express.

Neil Clark: Exactly 100 years ago the wealthy bought revolvers to protect themselves against the mob, soldiers shot striking workers dead and revolution was in the air...

THE Edwardian era is often portrayed as a period of peace and calm that preceded the horrors of the First World War.

In fact the early years of the 20th century were a time of enormous social unrest. And exactly 100 years ago this month, in August 1911, Britain appeared to be on the brink of revolution.

You can read the whole article here:

UPDATE: At the end of the piece I say:

The Britain of 2011 is a very different country to that of 1911 but with real wages once again falling and tens of billions of pounds wiped off the stock market amid fears of a global economic crash, is our situation really that much less volatile?

After this weekend's events- it seems that it isn’t.

Suddenly soft on crime, Mr Clark?

in another 100 years Britain may once more be on the brink of another revolution...but unless it has the baking of a Freedom House, its unlikely to get any further than the previous efforts!

Karma sucks! Just as Cameron!

Now that the UK has erupted in a violent rebellion, and the state is cracking down violently, can we expect the UNSC to issue Resolutions to prevent the state from killing civilians? And will NATO offer to lend air support to the rebels? How exactly does this differ from Libyas east? Doesnt this resemble Benghazi just a little?

'Kavanagh vowed to deliver "speedy justice" for Londoners, condemning the waves of looting as "disgusting behaviour, ripping apart people's livelihoods and businesses".'

Ripping apart peoples livelihoods….the people fleeing Benghazi understand this all too well….Only there, when the state tried to restore control, the UN condemned the Libyan govt, and sent in NATO bombers to back the people ripping Libya apart!

'Harry North': no, I'm still tough on crime, particularly what was described at Nuremberg as the "supreme international crime"
ie to initiate a war of aggression.

1D4TW @carotweet Also ironic to suggest that those rebels are fighting for "human rights", as they routinely deny them to any towns they conquer
about 15 hours ago in reply to carotweet

1D4TW @carotweet If there was any irony, it was certainly not mine. The rebels that Cameron supports, do this ( f24.my/qfsVyc )
(ie rape looting and arson!)

1D4TW David Cameron will want to go very easy on the rioters in London...or else we might have to accuse him of "attacking his own people" #Libya
about 16 hours ago

And Libyas Govt recognises the Tottenham rebels as the legitimate govt of UK..invites leaders to Tripoli

I would just add "Soon coming to America: deficit hysteria, austerity, and riots".

Funny we spend millions annually financing and supporting Soros lead colour revolutions using Twitter, Facebook, youth movements, NGO’s, etc and when the same thing happens spontaneously in our own country using the exact same social networking sites we cry foul.

When the Belarussian opposition smashed up the parliament they got praise and political/financial support from the west.

@brian

Gadaffi’s response to hearing about the London riots.
